Scouthike 2012 (CANCELLED)

Unfortunately, Scouthike 2012 was cancelled due to extreme weather which meant that the buses were not able to safely get into the site and there was a risk that Scouts may have suffered from hypothermia.

Scouthike is an annual hiking event organized for Scouts from all over the State.

Scouthike 2012 is to be held in the Tallarook State Forest on the weekend of 25th, 26th & 27th May, 2012.

Scout Patrols from metropolitan Melbourne are picked up by coach at Walker Park (Mitcham) and dropped of at their Friday night Campsite in Tallarook State Forest, the PLs are provided with a map, a list of grid references for Activity and Sleep Point locations, and a Patrol Passport including their instructions. Patrols plot the activity points and decide which route they want to take and set off after breakfast on Saturday morning, hiking between activity points to their designated Saturday Sleep Point. Sunday morning they head off again to finish at a central finish point from where they are collected by the coaches and returned to the metropolitan pick up location.

Patrols from Country regions also join in but they are required to provide their own transport.

Each Activity is a Patrol-based exercise, based on Scout Skills, usually linked to a requirement from the Explorer Level Award Scheme, some of the Activities are just fun, Patrols are assessed at each Activity, the total of their weekend scores determining if they are Gold, Silver, Bronze or Competitor standard. Competitive Patrols earning Gold Standard, are "Co-holders" of the Scouthike Trophy and have the right to proudly display it at Group and other special occasions. Patrols are assessed as a team in four aspects: "Leadership", "Planning", "Attitude and Enthusiasm" and "Overall Achievement"

Patrols not quite competent in hiking, can enter as "Learner Patrols". Learner Patrols bring along a Leader or Adult to accompany and guide them and only carry day packs on Saturday. Learner Patrols can only qualify for Competitor standard since they are assisted by adults, most Learner Patrols are keen to come back the following year and try out their newly-gained skills.

All Patrols are required to be self-sufficient and bring along all their lightweight camping, hiking and cooking needs for the weekend, except that cooking fires are provided at the Sleep Points since Patrols are not permitted to bring their own cooking stoves or fire starting materials.

Scouthike provides a two-fold purpose of providing Scouts who have not or do not have the opportunity to regularly go hiking and a novel approach as an introduction to hiking and lightweight camping. Further it provides a competitive basis for Scouts and Patrols who have been hiking to compete for the perpetual trophy. Every Patrol receives a Scouthike Pennant and every Scout receives a Scouthike blanket badge and a pocket badge for their uniform.

This year we have two patrols entered in Scout Hike:

Platypus (1112MH) - Mikayla (PL), Sally, Maddie and Daniel B - as a competitive patrol; and
Tigers (3333JS) - James S (PL), Stuart, Tom R and Julian - as a learner patrol (accompanied by Darren - Stuart's dad).

The Platypus patrol are travelling on Bus 1 and the Tigers are travelling on Bus 3.
You need to be at Walker Park by 6:30 pm for booking in by 6:45 pm. The bus WILL leave at 7:00 pm.
The bus will return to the same location on Sunday by 4:30 pm (approx) - it is seldom later than this.

What to bring ...
Please see below for a personal gear list. It is best to pack as light as possible. The idea is to have layers. Please pack your gear this weekend (19-20 May) and walk around with your pack. Best to fix any issues this weekend and not when hiking!

Remember have the lightest pack possible. Also have a good pair of walking boots. If you need a good lightweight sleeping, look at hiring one if you don’t have one.

We will hand out the tents next Thursday (24 May). They will be two man tents, so you can share the weight, ie, one person has the fly and poles, while the other has the tent and pegs. Make sure you have plastic bags to put the tents/fly in as they could get wet.

Also have a good pack liner, ( sturdy plastic bag ). Make sure your sleeping bag is also in its own plastic bag.
