What is a BioBlitz?
A BioBlitz is an event in which we record and collect data of the animals and plants that live in our local area. The Whitehorse District BioBlitz is a citizen science project and can be put towards some badge work. Scouts will work in groups and be assigned a specific area of Blackburn Lake Sanctuary. There will be a series of fun activities that Scouts of all ages will enjoy.

When: 1pm Saturday 8 October to 1pm Sunday 9 October 2016

Where: Blackburn Lake Sanctuary and 1/8 Blackburn Hall (12-16 Lake Road, Blackburn)

Who: Scouts and Venturers - overnight tent camping at 1/8 Blackburn Scout Hall

Cost: $5 for Scouts and Venturers

Catering: BYO Saturday afternoon snack and dilly bag. Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast and morning tea provided. Eat lunch for both days at home.

Gilweroo - Fri 25 to Sun 27 Nov

This is a major activity camp and is very popular with Scouts across Victoria. It offers a wide variety of fun activities, including flying fox, geocaching, catapaults, rock climbing, water slide to name a few. The camp is held at Bay Park, Mt Martha. The total cost is $75 for the weekend. This camp is very popular which means that you will need to get your name on the list fast! For more details see the Gilweroo web site.

The main day time activities are run from 8:00am til 5:30pm on Saturday and 8:00am til 2:00pm Sunday, with only minimal breaks. We will meet at the Scout Hall at 6:30pm on Friday night (25 Nov) and return to the hall by 5pm on Sunday afternoon (27 Nov). You will need to have had tea before we head off to Gilweroo.

We will need some people (parents/venturers) to assist with cooking across the weekend as the Scouts are kept busy with activities throughout the weekend.

Cohen Shield 2016 – Scout Vs Wild 
In today’s urban lifestyle there isn’t a lot of wild left. We Scouting people know better. We know not only where to find the wild, we know how to tame it.

This year’s Cohen Shield is all about showing our skills and learning new skills that we can use during our camping life in our Patrols. Coping with the wild is part of the Scouting journey, part of the adventure and something that our Award Scheme prepares us for. The activities in this year’s Cohen have been developed from suggestions from Youth Members.

2016 Activities:
  1. Campcraft - Survival
  2. Campcraft/Construction - Shelter
  3. Campcraft - Wet fire with a twist
  4. Citizenship - First Aid
  5. Just For Fun (Shhh don’t tell your Scout Leader that Cohen Shield is fun).
Cohen Shield is held at Clifford Park.

Billy Kart Challenge - Sat 10 Sep

Patrols are invited to race their 'Billy Kart' against the clock and other Patrols in the 

Scout Billy Kart Challenge 2016 

What a great opportunity to gain a ‘Patrol Activity Badge’ or ‘Trade Proficiency Badge’ by Building and Racing your own Patrol Billy Kart!

Talk to your Scout Leader, get Troop Council approval and Start Building today!

(Your Billy Kart will need to conform to the overall specifications and Safety requirements listed)

There will be 3 events on the day:
  1. The Down Hill Challenge
  2. The Cross Country Rally
  3. The Precision Slalom Course.
So come along and have some fun as you test your driving skills against other Patrols.

Trophy's will be presented to the Overall Winner, the Winner of each event PLUS a special "Constructor's Trophy" for the best "Scout's Only" designed and built Billy Kart.

Whitehorse Showtime - Thu 25 Aug

"Legend has it ..."

Myths and legends have always captivated the imagination of people all over the world.  Have you heard the one about the laziest pirates to ever sail the seven seas?  Or how about the quest for the mythical Fountain of Youth?  And surely everyone knows the legend of Robin Hood, but do you know the real story?  Come along and be captivated once more by fantastic tales of adventure and intrigue!”

Scouts will be visiting the show on Thursday 25 August. It is held at the Whitehorse Centre, Nunawading. 

Cost of tickets is $20 per person (group booking price).

Family members are welcome to attend the show along with the Scouts.

Fantastic Race - Sat 30 to Sun 31 Jul

The Fantastic Race is a Patrol Activity that requires you to travel around via public transport and foot power, use the grey matter between your ears, yes that is thinking and I know it hurts, to complete challenges and find information and clues that you will use to complete the “Password” that will give you access to your next destination and challenges.

Commencing at the Heathmont Railway Station Car Park at 7am on Saturday, (Melway map 50 A12), you will venture out as Patrols travelling primarily by train and foot to a series of destinations at which you will be required to complete a challenge, answer some questions or solve a puzzle in order to complete the password to get your next instructions.

The fantastic Race finishes up at the Scout Hall in H.E. Parker Reserve at 2:30pm on Sunday (Melway map 64 C2).

The cost is $15.00 per Scout to cover Dinner and Breakfast, Camp Blanket Badge, Prizes and running costs. You will also need to have a myki card with sufficient credit for travel in Zone 2 for the weekend. Each patrol must have a mobile phone which is used to check in with base and for emergency use (DO NOT FORGET YOUR PHONE CHARGER TO RE-CHARGE THE PHONE OVER NIGHT) . 

You will need to bring Sleeping Gear for Saturday night, pocket money for lunch and snacks or separate food, Dilly Bag and a sense of adventure and fun!!!

Mudbash Open Day - Sun 12 Jun

The Mudbash Open Day is an opportunity for members of Scouting and the general public alike to come and see the best of Rovers.

Date: Sunday 7th of June 2016 (Queen’s Birthday Weekend)

Time: 9am - 5pm (gates open 8am)

Cost: Prices to be confirmed, Gold coin donation for all uniformed members.

The Open Day is an action packed fun filled day for all ages. This year, activities range from adventurous to creative including abseiling, archery, a bouldering wall, jumping castle, karaoke face-painting and a scavenger hunt just to name a few. Visitors aged under 18 can take on the Mudbash Challenge if they dare.

Of course the main attraction is the racing with the infamous Obstacle Course challenging both cars and drivers in a true test of skill and endurance. Plus we have loads of racing entertainment with 7 tracks running throughout the day and Hotlaps available for visitors aged 12 years and over.


As always the Mafeking Canteen will be stocking a range of delicious food and drinks to keep you going through the day. This year we welcome a professional barista to the Park to warm our bellies with the best coffee and hot chocolate in the Highlands!

Scout Hike - Fri 20 to Sun 22 May

Scout Hike is an annual, state-wide hiking event for between 200 and 500 scouts. 

In 2016, Scout Hike will be held in Tallarook State Forest, from Friday 20th through to Sunday 22nd May. 

Branch First Aid, 4x4 and Radio teams work together with the Scout Hike organising committee to provide services and support for this highly successful event. 

Scout Hike has a theme base each year, with every person, Sleep point and activity site being asked to dress-up to the theme each year, so increasing the fun aspect of the weekend. The theme for 2016 is Science Fiction.

Scouts take part in the event as part of a Learner Patrol or a Competition Patrol.

On Friday evening Scout Patrols from metropolitan Melbourne are transported by coaches to a leader operated Sleep-point in Tallarook State Forest. The PL’s are provided with a map, a list of grid references for Activity and Sleep Point locations, and a Patrol Passport which includes their instructions. Patrols plot the Activity points and decide which route they want to take throughout the weekend. After breakfast on Saturday morning, Competition Patrols set off hiking between Activities to their designated Saturday Sleep Point. Sunday morning they head off again to finish at a central Finish Point, from where they are collected by the coaches and travel back to their original departure location.

Learner Patrols are also provided for, although they are accompanied by an adult on their hike, walk with a full sized backpack (not a day pack) and return to the same Sleep point on Saturday night. Note: on Saturday the full sized back pack is without their tent and sleeping gear which are still set up at their Sleep Point.

Each Activity is a Patrol-based exercise provided by Leaders, Rovers and Venturers. Those which are not purely fun are based on Scout Skills, usually linked to a requirement from the Explorer Level Award Scheme. Patrols are assessed at each Activity as a team in four aspects: "Leadership", "Planning", "Attitude and Enthusiasm" and "Overall Achievement". The total of their weekend scores determine if they are Gold, Silver, Bronze or Competitor standard. Competitive Patrols earning Gold Standard, are "Co-holders" of the Annual Scouthike Trophy and have the right to proudly display it at Group and other special occasions. Learner patrols all receive a Competition pennant.

The cost is $60.00 per head for all Metro Region Scouts, (plus 100 Bonus Points, if received before 26th April). This covers cost of bus transport to and from the hike area, pennants for each Patrol, badges for each person involved, toilets, drinking water, as well as administration costs. 
Note: There is an additional cost for food for the weekend as determined by the patrol.

The cost for the leader or adult accompanying a Learner Patrol is $36.00.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service - Mon 25 Apr

We are going to the Shrine for the Dawn Service. As in previous years we will meet outside St. Johns Primary School on Whitehorse Rd at 4:20am and catching the free bus service to the Shrine. 

Instead of staying in town for the Gunfire Breakfast, we will go to Nunawading McDonalds and be collected from there at 8:30am. If you don't want to have breakfast, the bus will return at 7:30am to Mitcham. 

This activity is open to parents and siblings of Scouts as well. As Badger needs to book the bus he needs to know numbers by Thursday 21 April. Scouts will need to be in full uniform and have a Health Form. Money for breakfast also required. Hope you can make the early start. The service at the Shrine is an amazing experience and is highly recommended.
